Update on LyondellBasell Acetic Acid Unit Incident

No Picture

This is an update from LyondellBasell on the acetic acid incident that occurred at our La Porte Complex:

LyondellBasell is preparing to restart its acetic acid unit located at its La Porte Complex, which was involved in the July 27, 2021 incident.

We continue to cooperate with the multiple agencies that are investigating the incident and have now gained full release of the site to safely restart.  Additionally, our investigation team continues to evaluate evidence and analyze facts. Based on information gathered at this time, there are no signs of a process upset or overpressure. Similarly, there is no evidence of any equipment or mechanical integrity failure or prior leak. The incident occurred when a third-party contractor maintenance crew went beyond the scope of the permitted work and removed a valve cover, creating an opening to the process allowing the reactor contents to escape. Our investigation team is working to understand why the permit was exceeded.

We will always remember our colleagues who were lost and wish for the healthy recovery of those who were injured.
